Brush-Fire-1

If you were out and about this weekend in Winter Haven or Lakeland, chances are you saw or at least smelled smoke. But the fire wasn’t even in Polk County, instead the smoke came in from neighboring Pasco County.

Due to the high winds, the smoke of the 2,275 acre brush fire near Starkey Wilderness Preserve reached most of Central Florida. Although the fire is about 70 percent contained, heavy smoke remains in the area.

Know the Law: Burn Bans

This is just a friendly remind that 32 counties in Florida, including Polk, have issued burn bans to prevent further brush fires.

Violating the burn ban carries a fine of up to $500 fine or up to 60 days in jail or both penalties.

Driving in Smoky Conditions

We would also like to remind you to take caution while driving through smoky areas. Visibility can sometimes become limited, so it is very important that you keep distractions to a minimum and keep your eyes on the road.
