Dialysis is a medical process used mostly by patients who have kidney problems. Kidneys are necessary to maintain the proper chemical and water balances in the body. When kidneys fail, dialysis is used as an artificial replacement to remove toxins. One of the leading providers of dialysis centers and products is Fresnius Medical Care North America. Fresnius’ main office is in Germany. Two of the drugs that Fresnisus makes that are supposed to help dialysis patients are Granfuflo and NaturalLyte. Granfuflo is the powder form of the medication. NaturalLyte is the liquid form.
Heart Dangers because of the use of Fresnius dialysis drugs
Unfortunately, the drugs that Fresnius provided for dialysis patients didn’t work well. They caused a variety of symptoms including:
- Stroke
- Heart Attack
- Death
- Irregular heartbeats
- Low blood oxygen levels
- Low blood pressure
- Cardiac arrhythmia
- Other heart related failures
Recall of Granfuflo and NaturaLyte by the US FDA
On March 29, 2012, The US Federal Drug Administration (US FDA) made a Class I recall of the Fresnius Dialysis drugs Granfuflo and NaturalLyte. Class I recalls are issued in cases where death could occur. Part of the reason for the recall were the numerous cardiac/ heart problems that arose because of the use of these dialysis drugs. To make matters worse it was discovered through a company Fresenius memorandum that Fresenius actually knew of the heart dangers as of November, 2011 and failed to notify the public. The memorandum showed that Fresenius knew there was a large chance of heart complications and that it knew of over 900 cardiac problems in 2010.
Time is running out to file a dialysis claim.
Because of the US FDA 3/29/2012 recall, the clock is running on any dialysis claims against Fresenius. Most people used the dialysis drugs before that date. Claims should be brought no later than two years from the date of usage of the drugs (not the date of the recall). Don’t wait until 3/28/2012.
