Seasonal traffic is converging with peak holiday freight on I-75, I-95 and I-275, while commercial-vehicle crashes claimed 315 lives in Florida in 2024
TAMPA, Fla., Oct. 7, 2026 — Florida’s annual snowbird return is beginning just as holiday freight enters peak season, bringing more long-distance passenger traffic and freight loads onto highways already carrying thousands of commercial trucks each day.
The combination matters because traffic leaves less margin for error around large commercial vehicles. A fully loaded tractor-trailer can weigh up to 80,000 pounds, roughly 20 to 30 times more than a passenger vehicle, and large trucks can require up to two football fields to stop. Heavier loads further increase stopping distance, according to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.
The potential human toll is substantial. Preliminary Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles data show 46,651 commercial motor vehicle crashes occurred in Florida in 2024, resulting in 315 fatalities.
At the same time, the freight industry is entering its seasonal rush. DAT Freight & Analytics reported in September that holiday freight is already moving by October, bringing more loads and tighter trucking capacity before another surge in November and December.
That freight cycle is colliding with another Florida seasonal pattern.
The latest available U.S. Census Bureau data show Florida had 741,429 housing units classified for seasonal, recreational or occasional use in 2024, more than twice California’s 334,566, the second-highest total in the country.
A Brooks Law Group analysis of Census and Florida Department of Transportation data found that much of that seasonal-housing footprint is concentrated along some of Florida’s busiest commercial-truck corridors.
The issue is not that seasonal residents cause commercial-vehicle crashes. It is the convergence of long-distance seasonal travelers, holiday traffic and heavy freight on highways where large trucks already operate in significant numbers.
Where the Traffic Pressure Is Building
Southwest Florida: Seasonal Traffic Meets Heavy I-75 Freight
The clearest overlap appears along Southwest Florida’s I-75 corridor.
Lee, Collier, Sarasota and Manatee counties contain 210,910 seasonal-use housing units, 28.4% of Florida’s statewide total.
Those communities sit along an interstate already carrying substantial commercial traffic. An FDOT corridor analysis found approximately 3,000 to 13,000 trucks per day on I-75 through Lee and Collier counties, with portions of Lee County approaching 13,000 daily trucks.
That puts one of Florida’s largest concentrations of returning seasonal residents onto the same corridor where, at the upper end of FDOT’s count, a commercial truck passes roughly every several seconds over the course of a day.
Southeast Florida: High Seasonal Concentration Meets Major Freight Routes
The pattern repeats in Southeast Florida.
Broward, Palm Beach and Miami-Dade counties account for 158,990 seasonal-use housing units, or 21.4% of Florida’s statewide total.
In Miami-Dade, FDOT found SR 826 carries more than 20,000 trucks per day, while I-95, I-75 and U.S. 27 north of Florida’s Turnpike each carry more than 10,000 trucks daily.
The result is another major winter pressure point: a region with one of Florida’s largest seasonal populations sharing roads with some of the state’s heaviest commercial-freight traffic.
Tampa Bay: Seasonal Traffic Joins an Already Crowded I-275 Corridor
Pinellas County has 46,609 seasonal-use housing units, placing it among Florida’s largest seasonal-housing markets.
Its primary interstate connection to Hillsborough County crosses the Howard Frankland Bridge on I-275, a corridor FDOT says serves more than 200,000 daily travelers.
Before the new bridge configuration opened, federal bridge data showed the former southbound span carrying 83,500 vehicles per day in 2024, with trucks accounting for 7% of traffic, equivalent to roughly 5,800 truck movements per day on that span.
“Florida drivers are entering a stretch of the year when the roads get less forgiving,” said Steve Brooks of Brooks Law Group. “Seasonal residents are completing long trips, families are traveling for the holidays and commercial trucks are moving time-sensitive freight. Around an 80,000-pound truck, there is simply less room for a mistake. When that mistake becomes a serious crash, families carry the consequences long after traffic clears.”
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration notes that the size and weight of large trucks can make crashes more severe, while their longer stopping distances, large blind spots and limited maneuverability increase the importance of space and predictability in surrounding traffic.
Florida’s winter traffic squeeze is therefore not simply about snowbirds or trucks. It is about when more travelers, holiday traffic and heavy freight converge on the same roads, and how quickly an ordinary driving mistake can become a life-changing event when a large commercial vehicle is involved.
Methodology
Brooks Law Group analyzed the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2024 American Community Survey 1-Year Estimates, including Table B25004, Vacancy Status, and Table B25001, Housing Units.
Florida had 741,429 housing units classified as seasonal, recreational or occasional use in 2024. The 10 Florida counties with the largest counts contained 460,254 such units, approximately 62.1% of the statewide total.
Truck-traffic figures were drawn from Florida Department of Transportation corridor studies and truck-volume data.
The term “traffic pressure” is descriptive. The analysis does not establish that seasonal residents cause commercial-vehicle crashes, measure a statewide seasonal increase in crash risk or attribute any crash trend to snowbirds. Census seasonal-use housing data measure housing units, not people.
