As of today, Tuesday, April 7th, the Coronavirus death toll in Florida stands at 283. There are 14,504 confirmed cases. There is still a shortage of tests and a shortage of medical supplies. The number of cases and deaths are expected to continue to rise.
Cases range in severity and current area numbers are as follows: Hillsborough County cases total 597 – the state’s fifth largest; Pinellas County’s total is 380; and Polk County’s total is 197. New cases are predicted to increase with more testing available.
Many pre-testing cases, statewide and countrywide, may not be recognized in totals due to lack of testing availability and recovery from the virus. There are reports of 59 additional deaths in Miami/Dade that are now being linked to Coronavirus. These cases are not confirmed and not being accounted for, to date.
Confirmed cases have exceeded 14,000 statewide and have increased by thousands in the last week. The peak of the pandemic is predicted to be in early May. In an effort to flatten the curve of Coronavirus, a stay at home declaration was enacted by Florida’s Governor Ron DeSantis. Residents are to go out only for essential work and/or activities.
When should I get tested and where can I go?
Receiving test results may take anywhere from 2-10 days. This wait is comparative to the state average.
If you are experiencing symptoms such as fever, dry cough, and breathing difficulties call your doctor. Your doctor will determine if you need to be tested and where to go.

Testing criteria includes the following:
- Having a doctor’s note
Or
- In the past 14 days have had a fever or a cough and shortness of breath
- You must have been exposed to somebody with a known COVID-19 exposure
- You must have traveled internationally or traveled from California, Washington state, Oregon and New York
- Have an immune compromised condition.
- Be over the age of 65 with serious chronic health conditions (cancer, heart disease, diabetes, etc.)
A doctor’s note is not necessary but meeting the testing criteria is necessary.
