At the Brooks Law Group, we can’t get enough of student scholarships. That’s why we host two separate scholarship programs per year. For the past few years, we’ve given out two scholarships per semester to deserving students in the state of Florida. There’s nothing like making a positive impact in the lives of future Florida leaders!
The Fall 2019 Scholarship Semester
Last Friday wrapped up our Fall 2019 scholarship program. Our team was shocked at the number of high-quality essays that were submitted by high school seniors and undergrad students across our state. We’ve never struggled more to choose two winners, because so many of the essays we received were well-written and thought provoking.
In the end, we had to make a decision though. Steve Brooks, managing partner of the Brooks Law Group, filmed a video announcing the two students we selected from the southernmost point of the continental United States in Key West. Yes, we’re that committed to getting the word out about our scholarship winners!
The Fall 2019 Scholarship Topic
This semester, we challenged our students to tackle a major problem in our country: texting while driving. This is a problem that is especially prevalent among our current students, so we asked them to get a little bit introspective.
We asked our students to write an essay explaining why they thought the rates of distracted driving and texting while driving have continued to increase even as laws targeting the problem have gotten stricter. Also, how would they focus on solving this growing epidemic if they were in charge?
We selected this topic for a reason. In May of this year, Governor DeSantis signed a law making texting while driving a primary offense. For the first time, law enforcement officers will be able to pull over drivers they see texting without needing another traffic violation to be witnessed. Many of our students questioned whether or not this law would do much to solve the problem. Only time will tell.
The Scholarship Winners
Again, we’ve never had such a hard time selecting our top two students for a scholarship program. In the end, two students rose above the rest. Those students were:
- Kenzie Luckett
Kenzie is a senior at Deland High School who will graduate high school with her diploma and her AA in psychology from a dual-enrollment program this upcoming May. She plans on attending UF for undergrad and then pursuing her JD after. She’ll be taking home $1,000 scholarship to the school of her choice. Congratulations! - Justin Kelleher
Justin is a senior at Olympia High School. He plans on attending either Florida Southern or UF for a degree in business and psychology before pursuing a doctorate in Physical Therapy. He’ll take home a $250s scholarship to the school of his choice. Nice job!
