When your vehicle is in a collision with a semitruck, the consequences are often life-changing or even deadly. While car manufacturers have spent decades making their cars, trucks and SUVs as safe as possible, the force of a truck crash is enough to overcome even the most rock-solid safety features.
In the case of pedestrian truck crashes, the consequences are even more dire. While our bodies can hold up to some extreme wear and tear, they pale in comparison to the force of a commercial truck weighing up to 80,000 pounds or 40 tons. When a semitruck collides with a pedestrian, the outcome is bleak.
Two Lakeland Men Killed in Truck Crash on State Road 60
On Monday night, tragedy struck on Florida State Road 60. It was after 8 p.m. when two men from the Lakeland area were heading east on the paved right of way of the road.
A large International semi with a trailer attached was also traveling east when he came upon the bend in the road by Coronet Road. As the curve came up, the passenger side tires of the driver’s truck, who was also from Lakeland, crossed the white lines right where the two passengers were walking. The 18-wheeler collided with both pedestrians.
Polk law enforcement and fire rescue members responded to the scene of the accident where they found both pedestrians. One was declared dead at the scene of the accident. Another passed from his injuries shortly after he was airlifted to a Lakeland hospital.
At the time of this blog post, the accident is still under investigation.
Truck and Pedestrian Accident Statistics
Truck accidents are often the most difficult cases our firm sees. The devastation that a collision with a 40-ton truck can cause is heartbreaking. These accidents very often cause life-changing injuries or death, and that’s why having a skilled truck crash attorney on your side can be so important. When you look at the statistics behind pedestrian and truck accident statistics, the numbers are tragic.
- In 2017, large trucks killed 206 pedestrians and 71% of these pedestrians were hit by the front of the semitruck
- In 2018, 4,136 people were killed in large truck accidents and 15% of those fatalities were pedestrians, cyclists or motorcyclists
When a pedestrian is hit by an SUV versus a car, they are twice as likely to be killed. Now imagine how much larger and more deadly a large truck is. It’s no surprise that the consequences of a semitruck and pedestrian collision is very often fatal.
