I had a couple of uncles that diligently served our country in battle during World War II, and in the following years, my father served in the Army and a different uncle served in the Navy. Interestingly, our family service traces back to the Civil War – where my great great grandfather was the surgeon general of the State of Ohio for the Union Army. We have a letter from my great great grandfather written to his wife from the battlefields of the Civil War.
By the time my brother and I reached draft age, the Vietnam war was winding down, and we were not drafted. This was about the time that our country’s emphasis shifted to a volunteer army.
One of our former attorneys, Charles Laycock Sr. (now deceased), worked at Camp Lejeune as an attorney with the Army Corps of Engineers.
My brother (Beach Brooks Jr.) and nephew’s (Beach Brooks III) father-in-law/grandfather, Ed O’Donnell, was an air force aviator, who served his country for more than 20 years. Ed’s war stories of his 100 flights over Vietnam during the conflict with North Vietnam were scary, thrilling and kept us on the edge of our seats. It’s these folks that make our country great.
