motorcycle wreckage on road after motorcycle collision

Motorcycle collisions are frequent in Florida, as many bikers consider our state perfect for riding. Even with awareness campaigns and more stringent laws for motorists, bikers remain at risk when on our local roads. Unfortunately, this was proven true during just one week in May this year, as 3 separate motorcycle accidents occurred in Tampa Bay, killing 3 bikers within 7 days. These accidents occurred due to vehicles turning in front of the motorcyclists which is a common scenario.

We are heartbroken at the devastation these accidents bring to our community. They don’t have to happen! Our informative “Motorcycle 101” guide below is a great way to prepare yourself before you hit the road, whether on two wheels or four.

How often do motorcycle collisions happen in Florida?

According to Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FHSMV), from January-June, 2024, there have been:

4,567 motorcycle collisions

To clarify, the FHSMV defines a motorcycle crash as

“a crash involving any motor vehicle having a seat or saddle for the use of the rider, designed to travel on not more than 3 wheels in contact with the ground, excludes tractors and mopeds”

283 motorcycle fatalities

Out of the 4,567 accidents referenced above, 283 of them resulted in the fatality of the biker. That’s a startling statistic in just a 6 month time!

Why do motorcycle accidents happen?

The specifics of each motorcycle accident vary, but several common traits can be observed when you study the collisions occurring in Florida. Some of the most frequent scenarios surrounding motorcycle collisions are:

  • a car turns in front of the biker
  • a vehicle runs a stoplight or stop sign, colliding with a motorcyclist
  • lack of visibility leads to sideswipe collisions or rear-ending accidents with bikers

As a driver, slow down, look twice, and follow the rules of the road. You’ll prevent motorcycle collisions and save lives!

What are the most common factors in motorcycle collisions?

As mentioned, the details of motorcycle accidents are different in each case. However, several key factors most often lead to motorcycle accidents.

Speed

A motorcyclist driving too fast, and (or) a car traveling at a high rate of speed, frequently causes deadly accidents. All parties are responsible for following the posted speed limits, and using judgment at times when speed should be adjusted (like during inclement weather).

Lack of visibility at night is a major factor in many motorcycle collisions.

Lack of Visibility

Making yourself visible as a motorcyclist is crucial to your safety. Wear brightly colored clothing, invest in extra lighting for driving after dark, and stay out of the danger zone (blind spots) of other cars and large trucks.

Distracted Driving

Motorists driving while distracted kill thousands of people on the road each year. Sadly, texting, eating, using the radio, and even interacting with others in the vehicle can be deadly to motorcyclists on the road with these distracted drivers.

Impaired Driving

Drinking and driving, or driving under the influence of drugs, is a problem across the US. No matter your vehicle of choice, stay sober, or don’t get on the road. Period.

Road Conditions

For motorcyclists, road conditions play a big role in safety. Roads that are poorly maintained, or roads covered in debris, can be catastrophic when on a bike. Weather too affects road conditions, and rain, ice, or snow are detrimental to motorcyclists.
