Lyft Policy Changes Takes Human Judgment Out of Safety Decisions

The ridesharing service Lyft recently enacted several protocols that standardize the way that its drivers are evaluated for safety.

The new policy, Safety Policy and Community Compliance (SPCC), uses a “decision matrix” to determine when to remove a driver from the platform. The company’s Trust and Safety team must now follow strict guidelines that appear on a computer and tell them how to make the decision. A team member’s own judgment is no longer taken into consideration.

Before, the Trust and Safety team could make a decision to remove a driver based on a pattern of unsafe driving. That may no longer be the case. A computer may not detect the same patterns, leaving a dangerous driver on the roads.

Similarly, drivers that were previously removed from Lyft over safety concerns can apply to have their case reviewed and could potentially start working for the service again. Under the new system, the computerized program may not pick up on the warning signs that humans did.

How the Policy Change Could Affect Lyft Riders

Critics have reasonable safety concerns associated with Lyft’s new policy. Driving requires the judgment of the human mind, as do decisions regarding when to take negligent and dangerous drivers off the road. Prohibiting Lyft team members from exercising their own judgment while vetting potential drivers puts riders, other motorists, pedestrians, and bicyclists at risk.
